April 2005 - Press Release
Martin Robey Engineering Ltd the long established manufacturer of High Quality parts for Classic Jaguars is continuing to invest in High Tech manufacturing equipment. Last year a 7 Axis Brake Press was introduced which folds Sheet Metal from a CNC program.
The angle and size of a Fold will be automatically adjusted for each fold, which by just re-calling the program for a part sets the machines Back Stops and eliminates time costing setting and allows a component with many folds to be picked up once and all the folds whether the same or different angles to be formed without setting the machinery for each Bend.
With digital readout and auto adjustment for gauge and material both efficiency and quality is improved.
Another Machine also purchased last year was a 5 Axis Laser Profiling Machine. These machines start at half a million pounds plus installation, training etc but the benefits are enormous says Brendon Robey, son of Martin Robey and Production Manager of the Plant, we can press a complete Wing or any Panel and profile the finished shape complete with Holes and Cut Outs for Indicators etc, It eliminates marking out, Rough or Pre trimming, Trimming with mechanical shears and probably a final trim in a tight corner with Hand Shears and then drilling and punching, These former operations are high Labour intensive and also cause distortion to the panels and cause re-working, The laser doesn’t cause any distortion as the heat is so concentrated and cools after cutting immediately. The process is also extremely accurate once the machine is programmed which on a large panel can take a day with checking and adjustments etc the process can be changing from one component to another within minutes. We estimate we have over a thousand jigs to make and programs to write for Classic Jaguar parts that we make, but once a part is profiled by this method it doesn’t bear consideration to go back to the old methods.
The 7 Axis Brake Press is quick to set and is accurate and efficient at bending Sheet Metal Parts.
An E-Type Drop Head Boot lid Skin Pressing is being profiled by the 5 Axis Laser Machine, The cut is less than 1mm wide and leaves no distortion. Panels as large as 3 metre x 2 metre can be profiled 3 dimentially.
